Brief

Jessica L. Cozzi, author of We’ve Hit Turbulence, wanted a design of a postage stamp enamel pin to include as a pre-order incentive in her campaign with The Ripped Bodice, an independent bookstore in Brooklyn, NY. She asked for a “cute and simple” illustration including boarding passes for a one inch enamel pin and provided a few illustrated examples of boarding passes for reference.

Design

Beach Background

Since her debut novel takes place primarily in Oahu, Hawai’i, and Jessica has been using beach-y, tropical imagery in the graphics she has made herself and posted on her social media channels, I decided to add the beach imagery to the postage stamp’s design to more closely tie the pin in with the novel.

I considered adding seashells on the sand, but I didn’t want anything with too much detail with the pin being about an inch in width and needing thicker line art. Instead, I included two starfish in the sand in the colors associated with the two main characters on the cover.

Boarding Passes

The novel begins with the main character running into her ex on a flight from JFK to HNL, hence the specified origin and destination on the pin. The colors on these boarding passes were pulled from the title on the cover but had to be changed by the manufacturer to bring the price down. When positioning the angled pass, I made sure that there was enough fill between each of the lines that the design would stay legible and overall make it worth including the second boarding pass on it.

The colors for this pin were pulled from the cover of We’ve Hit Turbulence, designed by Mallory Heyer.
